As part of the 2026 Caribbean Wellness Month observance, Dominica’s Ministry of Health, Wellness and Social Services has expanded its community health outreach to a group that often overlooks routine care: local bus operators. Deploying the Roseau Health Team to take services directly to workers, the initiative set up a temporary health hub at the busy Mahaut Bus Stop, eliminating key barriers that keep drivers from accessing preventive care. This on-site model allows operators to complete necessary health checks without stepping away from their daily work of moving passengers across the island.
At the pop-up clinic, participating drivers received a range of no-cost basic health services, including routine blood pressure screenings, blood glucose testing, and general health assessments. When screenings flagged potential health concerns, care providers connected participants with referrals for comprehensive follow-up treatment at local medical facilities.
The program was deliberately designed to prioritize younger bus operators and full-time drivers, a demographic that faces unique barriers to consistent preventive care. Long, irregular shifts and the financial pressure of taking time off work often push routine check-ups to the bottom of their priority lists, leaving many undiagnosed for common chronic conditions.
Public health leaders leading the initiative stressed that proactive preventive care delivers far better health outcomes than waiting for noticeable symptoms to develop. This messaging resonates strongly with the local bus operator community, where multiple drivers have reported losing peers at young ages to undiagnosed, preventable medical conditions.
To extend the impact of the program, the Ministry of Health has confirmed that additional “Health Drives for the Drivers” sessions will roll out across the country for the remainder of Caribbean Wellness Month, with plans to continue the outreach beyond the September observance. The ongoing campaign aims to empower all local bus operators to track their key health metrics, catch potential health risks early, and access timely care to address any issues that arise.
