Island communities take centre stage at inaugural showcase

For the first time in the Caribbean island nation’s tourism history, Saint Lucia is welcoming 100 global travel industry delegates to its inaugural Saint Lucia Showcase International, held at the Royalton Saint Lucia resort through September 20, 2026. Built around the theme “Welcome to Our World… Welcome to Our Communities,” the landmark event marks a deliberate shift from previous overseas showcases held in the United Kingdom and North America, putting Saint Lucia’s community-centered tourism vision front and center for international partners.

Opening the summit on Thursday, Tourism Minister Dr. Ernest Hilaire emphasized that bringing delegates to the island in person, rather than promoting the destination through paper brochures from afar, is designed to deepen collaborative relationships and showcase the full spectrum of authentic Saint Lucian experiences. Hilaire noted that Saint Lucia’s tourism sector has already posted strong performance in recent years, and government leadership is focused on translating that momentum into tangible, widespread economic opportunity for local residents. To sustain long-term growth, the government is investing heavily across key priority areas: upgraded tourism infrastructure, expanded international air access, new product development, targeted global marketing, and immersive visitor experiences that set the island apart in a crowded global market. “We are focused not only on attracting increased visitor numbers, but on ensuring that Saint Lucia remains competitive, relevant and compelling in a changing global tourism market,” Hilaire told attendees.

Organized jointly by the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority (SLTA) and the Ministry of Tourism, the event draws 100 travel industry partners from 10 major markets across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, broader Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean. SLTA Chief Executive Officer Louis Lewis framed the showcase as more than a promotional event—it is a platform to build mutually beneficial long-term partnerships that drive sustainable growth. “Saint Lucia International Showcase is about more than just showing off the destination. It’s about creating real growth opportunities,” Lewis said. “We have the place, the people, the stories, and the experiences. Now, our job is to turn these into strong partnerships, new business, and more reasons for travellers to choose Saint Lucia.”

To deliver on the event’s community-focused mission, the Community Tourism Agency (CTA) has curated a full slate of immersive, community-led activities for delegates to experience firsthand the diversity of local offerings across the island. In northern Saint Lucia, delegates can tour the iconic art gallery of renowned Saint Lucian artist Llewellyn Xavier, while adventure-focused activities include off-road ATV tours and eco-friendly e-biking excursions through the island’s lush landscapes. In the south, local community leaders host farm-to-table dining experiences and traditional sea moss cultural activities, alongside new culinary and cultural programming that highlights the island’s unique heritage. CTA Chief Executive Officer Dahlia Guard explained that integrating local small businesses and entrepreneurs into the broader tourism value chain ensures that more economic benefits from tourism reach grassroots communities and support stable household livelihoods across the island.

In addition to industry networking and community immersion, the SLTA used the 2026 showcase to unveil an exciting new tourism attraction for visitors: Below Saint Lucia, the island’s first underwater sculpture park dive experience. Developed in time for the upcoming peak winter travel season, the new attraction is designed to expand the island’s adventure tourism offerings and draw more diving enthusiasts to Saint Lucia. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism Donalyn Vittet noted that the island is already home to 22 established natural dive sites, which the ministry and SLTA have developed over years of collaboration with local dive industry association Anbanglo. The new underwater sculpture park represents the latest step in adding unique value to the island’s diving sector, creating a new incentive for divers to add Saint Lucia to their travel itineraries.

Industry observers note that the in-person showcase represents a new strategic approach for the SLTA, shifting away from remote international promotional events to direct, on-island engagement that builds trust and highlights the island’s unique identity. For Saint Lucia, which has long positioned itself as a premium Caribbean travel destination, the event aligns with broader efforts to make tourism more inclusive, ensure community benefits are distributed more widely, and secure the island’s position as a top competitor in the global tourism market for years to come.
