A rising young creative from Antigua and Barbuda has catapulted into the global spotlight after a standout performance at the London launch of the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) Cricket Match, turning her musical talent into a major opportunity to advance youth mental health advocacy across the Commonwealth.
Annia Matthews, a fast-growing Antiguan artist, joined the high-profile event as a specially invited musical guest, where she delivered a confident, electrifying performance of her original track *Keep On*. The set held international attendees spellbound, drawing widespread praise not only for Matthews’ powerhouse vocal control and magnetic stage presence, but also for her thoughtful, authentic representation of her home nation.
Unlike typical performance pieces, *Keep On* weaves a raw, impactful message centered on mental health awareness—a theme that resonated so deeply with Commonwealth leadership that it earned Matthews a direct invitation from Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey to co-lead a high-level roundtable focused on Youth Mental Health. The roundtable is scheduled to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day, marking a major step for the young artist beyond the stage into global public advocacy.
The launch event also brought a full-circle moment for Matthews, who got the chance to meet Antigua and Barbuda’s own cricket icon Sir Vivian Richards. The legendary athlete offered glowing praise for her artistic skill and her consistent work elevating her country on the international stage. For Matthews, the encounter was particularly meaningful.
“I felt truly honoured to perform at the launch of the CHOGM cricket match and to be in a room filled with so many people who have made, and continue to make, an impact across the Commonwealth,” Matthews shared in comments after the event. “There was a real sense of connection in the room, and I felt emotionally connected to the significance of the moment.”
She added, “Seeing Sir Vivian Richards take part in the passing-on-the-bat ceremony was especially inspirational for me. As an Antiguan artist, I felt the weight of responsibility in that moment, standing between his generation and mine, and recognising the importance of carrying our culture, stories and legacy forward.”
Matthews’ breakout appearance at the CHOGM event aligns with a deliberate push by Antigua and Barbuda’s diplomatic mission in the UK to lift up emerging domestic creative talent. Her Excellency Karen-Mae Hill, Antigua and Barbuda’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, has made it a priority to integrate young local creatives into the mission’s diplomatic and cultural programming. Currently, Matthews is based in the UK refining her craft, a next step that followed an earlier invitation to perform at the annual Wings of Charity Gala in June. That gala was hosted by Their Excellencies Sir Rodney Williams and Lady Williams, marking the first major international opportunity that opened doors for the young artist.
