Marjolein Busstra treedt aan als nieuwe Nederlandse ambassadeur in Suriname

In a formal diplomatic ceremony held on August 20, Marjolein Busstra, the newly appointed ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Republic of Suriname, officially presented her credentials to Surinamese President Jennifer Simons. The acceptance of her credentials formally marks the start of Busstra’s tenure as the Netherlands’ top diplomatic representative in the South American nation.

During the introductory meeting following the credential presentation, Busstra conveyed warm personal greetings from King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. The Dutch royal couple completed a state visit to Suriname in December 2025, a trip that laid fresh groundwork for expanded bilateral cooperation between the two nations.

Busstra used the discussion to outline key priorities for the Netherlands-Suriname partnership during her term, emphasizing her government’s strong commitment to building on and deepening the existing collaborative relationship between the two countries. “The relationship between the Netherlands and Suriname is both pragmatic and engaged, rooted in the principles of equality and mutual respect,” Busstra noted in comments after the meeting.

She added that the two nations already maintain close collaboration across a wide range of priority areas, including education, public health, rule of law, public safety, economic development, and cultural exchange. To advance this work, the second iteration of the Makandra Program — a major bilateral cooperation initiative first announced during the 2025 royal state visit — will drive intensified collaboration across these sectors over the coming years, Busstra confirmed.

Prior to her appointment to Suriname, Busstra served as deputy ambassador in Rabat, Morocco. This posting marks the first time Busstra and her family have lived and worked in Suriname. Speaking ahead of her work in the country, the new ambassador shared her enthusiasm for the role, saying “I am very much looking forward to getting to know Suriname and the Surinamese people better. The ties between our two countries are already very strong, and we collaborate across so many areas. I am committed to doing all I can to further strengthen this bilateral relationship.”
