The Dominican Republic is rolling out a convenient new public service that will let domestic and international travelers renew their passports directly at five major international airports, following a formal partnership between two national government agencies.
The agreement, struck between the country’s Airport Department (DA) and General Directorate of Passports (DGP), does more than just add on-the-go renewal options: it also supports the national transition to the country’s new generation of electronic biometric passports, a key modernization priority for the current administration.
Five airport locations across the country have been selected to host dedicated passport service offices, with four already confirmed: Las Américas International Airport, Punta Cana International Airport, Cibao International Airport, and Gregorio Luperón International Airport in Puerto Plata. A fifth location will be revealed to the public at a later date as the initiative rolls out in phases across the island nation.
The primary goal of these in-airport offices is to resolve last-minute travel emergencies that have long disrupted Dominican and visitor travel plans. For travelers who discover their passport has expired only days or hours before a scheduled international flight, the new service lets them complete the renewal process without having to cancel or reschedule their trip, eliminating the common stress of rushed off-site government applications.
Officials confirmed that the program is already past the planning stage: a pilot test of the service is currently up and running at the Cibao International Airport in Santiago, giving teams the chance to refine processes before a full national launch. DA Executive Director Víctor Pichardo noted that the new setup will deliver three key benefits: it will elevate the overall customer experience for travelers moving through Dominican airports, boost existing security protocols at airport facilities, and speed up the national shift to the more secure biometric passport standard.
For the DGP, the project delivers on a key policy commitment from the national executive branch. General Director of Passports Lorenzo Ramírez Uribe emphasized that the initiative fulfills a top modernization goal set by President Luis Abinader, which aims to update the country’s entire passport issuance system and expand access to emergency renewal services for travelers across the country.
Under the terms of the inter-agency agreement, the two government bodies will split responsibilities to keep the program running smoothly. The DA will manage all required infrastructure at the airport locations and provide ongoing technical support for the offices, while the DGP will directly staff and operate the renewal counters, as well as oversee the rollout of biometric passport services at each participating airport.
