On the afternoon of July 10, personnel from the Maritime Authority Suriname (MAS) alerted the country’s Maritime Police to suspected irregular activity taking place aboard a cargo vessel operating in Suriname’s waters. The report of suspicious behavior triggered an immediate official investigation, which led law enforcement officers to uncover a cache of packaged narcotics hidden in storage on the ship.
In a brief update on the ongoing operation, a spokesperson for the Maritime Police confirmed that multiple arrests have already been carried out, with all detained individuals currently being crew members found on the vessel at the time of the search. The investigation is now in an active, early phase, with detectives focused on tracing the origin of the seized drugs and identifying additional individuals that may be connected to the suspected smuggling operation.
To protect the integrity of the ongoing inquiry, law enforcement officials have declined to release further specific details about the incident, including the exact quantity and type of narcotics seized, the route the vessel was traveling, and the identities of the detained suspects, pending the completion of initial investigative steps.
