In observance of World Diabetes Day, the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) has issued a compelling appeal to governments, healthcare providers, civil society organizations, workplaces, and individuals across the region to rally behind the global theme, ‘Diabetes and Wellbeing.’ This initiative underscores the campaign’s focus on addressing diabetes in the workplace, curbing its rising prevalence, and mitigating its life-altering complications that affect thousands in the Caribbean. Diabetes, a chronic condition resulting from insufficient insulin production or ineffective insulin use, can lead to severe health issues such as nerve damage, cardiovascular diseases, kidney failure, blindness, and lower-limb amputations if not properly managed. Globally, diabetes remains a critical health threat, with 1.6 million deaths attributed to it in 2021, nearly half of which occurred before the age of 70. High blood glucose levels also accounted for 11% of cardiovascular deaths. The prevalence of diabetes has doubled since 1990, with 14% of adults living with the condition in 2022. In the Caribbean, diabetes is a significant public health challenge, with the highest prevalence in the Americas at 11.9%. Risk factors such as obesity (23.2%), physical inactivity (31%), and unhealthy diets are also alarmingly high. Dr. Lisa Indar, Executive Director of CARPHA, highlighted the agency’s efforts to combat diabetes through capacity-building initiatives. Over 100 healthcare providers and civil society representatives across five member states have been trained using CARPHA’s Guidelines for the Management of Diabetes in Primary Care in the Caribbean, adding to the 17 member states trained from 2021 to 2022. CARPHA is also set to relaunch an online, on-demand version of this training via a Moodle Learning Management System to enhance accessibility. CARPHA emphasizes that many risk factors for type 2 diabetes are preventable through healthy diets, regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding tobacco, and limiting alcohol. For those living with diabetes, proper treatment, lifestyle changes, and regular screenings can prevent or delay complications. CARPHA urges member states and partners to expand access to free or affordable diabetes risk screenings, implement or update national diabetes guidelines, promote healthy environments, and engage communities and individuals in prevention and care. Self-management, including monitoring blood glucose levels, adhering to medication, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, is crucial for individuals with diabetes. World Diabetes Day, the largest diabetes awareness campaign globally, unites individuals, healthcare professionals, advocates, policymakers, and the public to raise awareness and take action against diabetes, reaching over 160 countries.

New UAE ambassador to present credentials to Governor-General
In a significant diplomatic move, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has designated His Excellency Mohamed Issa Abushahab as its new ambassador to Grenada. The official credential presentation ceremony is scheduled for November 18, 2025, at the residence of Grenada’s Governor-General, Dame Cecile La Grenade, in Point Salines. This event marks a pivotal moment in the bilateral relations between the two nations, which were established in 1975. Currently, Ambassador-designate Abushahab serves as the UAE’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, where he plays a crucial role in international discussions on peace and security. He assumed this position in April 2024, succeeding Lana Nusseibeh, who also held the non-resident ambassadorship to Grenada. The UAE has been a key partner in Grenada’s development, notably funding the reconstruction of the Parliament building and supporting renewable energy projects like the Limlair Solar PV Hybrid initiative in Carriacou through the UAE-Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund. Additionally, several UAE nationals have obtained Grenadian citizenship through the Citizenship by Investment (CBI) Programme, further deepening the ties between the two countries. The UAE, a federation of seven emirates founded in 1971, continues to expand its global influence through strategic partnerships and investments.

July 2025 primary deficit worse than projected
Grenada’s fiscal landscape for 2025 presents a mixed picture, with both challenges and achievements highlighted in the latest report from the Ministry of Finance. The total Central Government debt at the end of 2024 was estimated at EC$2.2 billion, setting a significant backdrop for the year’s financial management. In July 2025, the government recorded an overall deficit of $27.9 million, which exceeded both the target for 2025 and the actual figures from 2024. However, the cumulative deficit from January to July 2025 stood at $55.1 million, a notable improvement compared to the targeted $99.2 million, though it still fell short of the previous year’s performance due to exceptional revenue inflows from the CCRIF payout and backlogged CBI applications. The primary deficit for July 2025 was $25.2 million, worse than projected, but the seven-month period saw a primary deficit of $33.7 million, outperforming the target by $39.1 million. Debt servicing remained steady, with principal payments totaling $8.5 million and interest payments at $2.7 million for July 2025. Over the January to July period, principal payments amounted to EC$67.3 million, with interest payments reaching EC$17.6 million. The report, available for public review on the Ministry’s website, underscores the complexities of Grenada’s fiscal strategy amid fluctuating revenue streams and debt obligations.
