The initiative, announced during a forum titled “Reclaiming Our Atlantic Destiny: Connect. Rebuild. Renew.,” aims to train doctors accredited to practise in both Barbados and Ghana. The 3+3 programme structure enables students to complete three years of preclinical studies at UWI Cave Hill, followed by three years of clinical training in Ghana. Graduates will receive a Bachelor of Science in Preclinical Sciences from UWI and an MBChB from the University of Ghana. The programme is fully accredited by the medical and dental councils of both nations, ensuring graduates can practise medicine in either country. Landis highlighted the programme’s strategic alignment, noting Barbados’ surplus preclinical capacity and Ghana’s robust clinical resources. Two Ghanaian students, the first cohort, were recognized during the event. The Asantehene, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, whose presence at the forum aimed to elevate the programme’s visibility in Ghana, also unveiled a commemorative portrait at the Hilary McDonald Beckles Administration Building, informally known as “The Golden Stool.” The forum was part of the Asantehene’s historic visit to Barbados for the GUBA Awards and Investment Conference.

C’bean pushes for scaled-up agricultural irrigation investment at investment forum

A high-level Caribbean delegation, including Floyd Greene, Jamaica’s Minister of Agriculture, Michael James, Barbados’ Chief Agriculture Officer, and Shaun Baugh, CARICOM’s Agriculture Programme Manager, made a strong case for enhanced investment in food and agriculture at the FAO Hand-in-Hand Investment Forum 2025 in Rome, Italy, from October 14 to 16. The delegation engaged in strategic discussions with four major development banks—CAF, CDB, IDB, and the World Bank—focusing on irrigation and climate-resilient agriculture as key to boosting regional food production, reducing import reliance, and fostering sustainable employment. CAF, which has financed over $200 billion in regional projects, pledged technical assistance and pre-feasibility grants up to $1 million, while CDB reaffirmed its commitment to Jamaica, its largest shareholder, with concessional loans. The $19.2 million regional initiative aims to provide irrigation to 764 hectares, benefiting 635 families directly and 4,000 people indirectly, while aligning with CARICOM’s goal to cut food imports by 25% by 2030. Projects include irrigation ponds in Barbados, surface water networks in Jamaica, and infrastructure rehabilitation in St Vincent and the Grenadines. Minister Greene emphasized irrigation as the backbone of agricultural transformation, while James highlighted the necessity of local production. The IDB and World Bank offered diverse financing options, and private-sector partners showcased advanced irrigation technologies. This collaboration marks a significant step toward a more resilient and food-secure Caribbean.

  • Purpose-built facility for vendors to be built at Little Ffryes Beach

Purpose-built facility for vendors to be built at Little Ffryes Beach

The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has greenlit the construction of a state-of-the-art vending facility at Little Ffryes Beach, marking a significant step toward improving the working conditions of local entrepreneurs, enhancing the visitor experience, and ensuring the sustainable management of one of the nation’s most cherished coastal destinations. This initiative is part of a broader government program aimed at upgrading and regulating vending operations at key tourism sites across the country. Little Ffryes Beach, a popular attraction for both locals and tourists, has long benefited from the vibrant presence of local vendors. However, the absence of structured facilities has led to challenges in sanitation, safety, and business organization. The new facility will address these issues by providing modern, sanitary, and eco-friendly vending spaces that blend seamlessly with the beach’s natural beauty. Key features include advanced waste disposal systems, restroom facilities, upgraded utilities, and designated parking and access areas. The project will be spearheaded by the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation, and Investment, in collaboration with the Development Control Authority (DCA) and the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority. The Ministry will also engage closely with existing vendors to ensure their needs are met and that their operations continue uninterrupted during construction. This initiative highlights the government’s commitment to supporting small and micro-enterprises, enhancing tourism experiences, and promoting sustainable development through environmentally responsible infrastructure. Construction is set to commence shortly after the completion of design and consultation phases. In a related move, the Cabinet has also approved the removal of unauthorized vending facilities from public beaches, including Morris Bay, Darkwood Beach, Fryers Beach, and Fort James. The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) has been instructed to disconnect utilities to these unauthorized operations. The Ministry of Social and Urban Transformation, alongside the DCA, will oversee the transition process to ensure affected vendors are supported and relocated to the new facility at Little Ffryes Beach. This dual approach underscores the government’s efforts to balance economic opportunities for small vendors with the need for orderly development, public safety, and environmental preservation.

New Dental and Eye Clinic to Be Established in Barbuda

The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has greenlit the establishment of a Dental and Eye Clinic in Codrington, Barbuda, marking a significant stride in the Government’s ongoing efforts to bolster healthcare accessibility and equity across the twin-island nation. For years, Barbudans have grappled with the arduous task of seeking dental and eye care, often necessitating costly and inconvenient trips to Antigua for procedures like extractions, fillings, and vision tests. The new clinic aims to bridge this gap by delivering essential oral and vision health services directly to the local community. This initiative is a cornerstone of the Government’s National Health Strategic Plan (2021–2025) and the Barbuda Recovery and Resilience Framework, which emphasize equitable healthcare access and the decentralization of vital social services. Additionally, the project aligns with the Sustainable Island Resource Framework (SIRF) by fostering climate-resilient, community-based infrastructure that enhances quality of life and promotes sustainable living. The clinic will be integrated within or adjacent to the Barbuda Health Centre, leveraging existing utilities, administrative resources, and security infrastructure to ensure cost-effectiveness and service continuity. Initially, a rotating team of dental surgeons and ophthalmologists from Antigua will staff the clinic, supported by local nurses and technicians. Over time, the Ministry of Health plans to roll out training programs to cultivate local expertise in basic dental and eye care. The Ministry of Health, Wellness, Environment, and Civil Service Affairs has been tasked with spearheading the project’s planning, coordination, and implementation, in collaboration with regional and international partners like the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) to secure technical assistance, equipment, and funding. Preparatory works are slated to begin within three months, with full operationalization expected within six to eight months. A comprehensive implementation report, detailing the project’s budget, timelines, staffing, and partnership arrangements, will be submitted to Cabinet within three months. In a related move, the Cabinet also approved the construction of a helipad near the Hanna Thomas Hospital to facilitate swift patient transfers between Antigua and Barbuda, as well as the expansion of a medical laboratory and the establishment of a Blood Bank at the hospital.
