During a two-day official visit to Saint Lucia spanning Thursday and Friday, FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced a landmark US$25 million (equivalent to EC$67.5 million) dedicated funding package to accelerate grassroots and elite football development across the small Caribbean island nation, while signaling active ongoing collaboration to rebuild the long-disused George Odlum Stadium as a world-class regional sporting hub.
The high-profile announcement was first delivered at a Thursday evening cocktail reception hosted at Government House, where Infantino addressed a packed audience of current and retired professional footballers, senior government officials, and local sports enthusiasts. “I can confirm to all of you today that starting January 1, 2027, US$25 million will be deployed directly in Saint Lucia across critical priority areas: purpose-built football infrastructure, youth development programmes, community outreach initiatives, and targeted support to turn the athletic dreams of young players across the island into tangible reality,” Infantino told attendees. “Football is a universal sport that belongs to every single person in every corner of the globe, and as long as I serve as FIFA’s president, we will prioritize equitable investment across all member nations, no matter their size, to create equal opportunities for players and fans everywhere.”
Infantino’s generous pledge received widespread acclaim from key local stakeholders, including Saint Lucia Prime Minister Philip J Pierre, Minister for Sports Kenson Casimir, and Saint Lucia Semi-Professional Football League CEO Alvin Malaykhan. This marked Infantino’s third official trip to Saint Lucia since 2019, and formed the second stop of a three-nation Caribbean tour that launched in Guyana before moving on to Grenada immediately after his Saint Lucia engagements. The visit also comes less than a year ahead of FIFA’s scheduled presidential elections in March 2025.
On the second day of his trip, Infantino joined Prime Minister Pierre, Sports Minister Casimir, and Saint Lucia Football Association President Lyndon Cooper for a working breakfast, where the long-mooted revival of the George Odlum Stadium in Vieux Fort took center stage. The facility has not hosted competitive football for nearly 20 years, after it was repurposed to house St Jude Hospital following damage to the original medical facility. Following a personal on-site inspection of the derelict stadium, Infantino framed the proposed redevelopment as a landmark regional asset. “We are in active, productive discussions to turn this site into a true national stadium, a jewel of the Caribbean that we can all take immense pride in,” he noted. “As FIFA president, being able to contribute to this collective effort fills me with enormous pride, and we have already made exceptional progress on the stadium project – we expect to share formal, detailed updates on our joint plans in the near future, because we are all part of the same global football family.”
Beyond the stadium redevelopment and core US$25 million funding package, Infantino confirmed he had held productive talks with Prime Minister Pierre on a suite of supplementary football development priorities, including the rollout of accessible mini community pitches across underserved neighborhoods, expanded youth talent scouting networks, purpose-built football academies, and targeted, dedicated investment to accelerate the growth of women’s football across Saint Lucia. He also floated a collaborative regional proposal to launch a structured, formal inter-island club football competition to raise competitive standards and boost audience engagement across the Caribbean football confederation. Before departing Saint Lucia for his next stop in Grenada, Infantino made an impromptu community visit to the beloved Thomazo bakery in Dennery, where he sampled fresh, locally baked artisanal bread and connected with local residents.
