National campaign aims to take the confusion out of insurance

For vast swathes of the Saint Lucian public, insurance remains an afterthought – a service they only stop to consider once a crisis, accident or unexpected hardship has already unfolded. A newly launched nationwide public education initiative is setting out to dismantle that reactive mindset, equipping local residents with clear, actionable knowledge of how insurance functions, what their premium payments actually cover, and how targeted coverage can act as a critical safety net when unforeseen life events strike.

Dubbed *Insurance & You 2026*, the 13-week national literacy campaign officially kicked off on October 30, co-developed and jointly overseen by the Insurance Council of Saint Lucia and the Financial Services Regulatory Authority, with a core mandate to lift public understanding of insurance principles and long-term financial preparedness across the island.

Moving far beyond abstract, jargon-heavy explanations of the sector, the program will break down insurance concepts through a practical, user-centric framework spanning a full spectrum of relevant coverage and financial planning topics: life and health insurance, residential and commercial property protection, motor vehicle coverage, pension schemes, retirement strategy, consumer rights for insurance policyholders, small and medium business insurance, and holistic household financial planning.

Joseph Dolor, the designated lead for the campaign, noted that one of the biggest barriers to widespread insurance uptake and proper utilization is the widespread perception that insurance is overly convoluted, inaccessible, or entirely irrelevant to daily life until a person faces an urgent, costly emergency. A portrait of Dolor, provided as a contributed photo, is hosted via the Saint Lucia Times public archive at https://stluciatimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/Joseph-Dolor-300×200.jpg.

“Insurance touches nearly every facet of modern daily life in Saint Lucia,” Dolor emphasized. “It helps families rebuild in the aftermath of natural disasters, keeps local small businesses afloat amid unplanned operational disruptions, safeguards household income during periods of illness or job loss, and gives people the peace of mind they need to make long-term investments in their communities and their futures. But far too many people still see insurance as confusing, opaque, or something they only need to think about after something has already gone wrong. The *Insurance & You* campaign is built to rewrite that narrative.”

Built around the central theme “Learn. Plan. Protect.”, the multi-channel outreach strategy will deploy a diverse suite of accessible public resources: explanatory written articles, short-form educational videos, one-on-one expert interviews, interactive webinars, targeted school education programs, and in-person community town hall discussions designed to demystify even the most complex insurance terms for audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

Campaign organizers stressed from the outset that the initiative is not designed to push or sell specific commercial insurance products to the public. “Our goal is not just to make people aware that insurance products exist,” Dolor clarified. “We are working to nurture a widespread cultural shift across Saint Lucia, where proactive financial preparedness is a shared value, the concept of financial resilience is widely understood, and people can make fully informed, confident decisions about their coverage without relying on sales pressure or fine print they cannot parse.”

Across the full 13-week run of the program, participants will also receive targeted guidance to clarify their full set of rights and responsibilities as insurance consumers, alongside practical frameworks for integrating insurance planning into broader long-term decisions about household finances, property ownership, business expansion, and post-retirement security.
