Vieux Fort South stretch lead despite stalemate

As the Saint Lucia Semi-Professional Football League’s top-tier Tier 1 division enters its decisive final stretch, with only three preliminary round matches remaining before the playoff cut-off, the competition landscape has been upended by a weekend of high-stakes fixtures that have left former title holders scrambling for postseason qualification while long-time league leaders extend their grip on the top spot.

Heading into the weekend’s slate of matches, table-toppers Vieux Fort South (VFS) entered their Friday fixture against Central Castries looking to pad their lead at the summit, even after being held to a frustrating 0-0 deadlock at Soufriere Stadium. The tightly contested clash saw VFS’s Shaun Joseph pick up a yellow card in the 21st minute, before Central Castries’ Kaylan Harry was cautioned in the 61st, as neither side could break through a resolute opposing defence. The result still pushed VFS’s lead at the top to a commanding four points, thanks to favourable results for other contenders across the rest of the weekend.

Saturday’s opening fixture delivered a dominant performance from Dennery, who blew past Vieux Fort North 4-0 with all four of their goals arriving before the halftime whistle. Striker Garvin Reggie notched a brace to extend his season-leading goal tally to 10, opening the scoring from the penalty spot in the 19th minute before adding a second in the 40th. Venus Valcent found the back of the net in the 23rd minute, and Shaquelle William rounded out the rout in the 31st, as the lopsided three points lifted Dennery straight into second place on the standings, leapfrogging their rivals on superior goal difference.

The second Saturday fixture delivered a major upset for two-time league champions La Clery, who suffered their sixth defeat of the campaign after falling 4-2 to Anse La Raye. Vershaun Jerome gave Anse La Raye an early lead in the 8th minute, before La Clery mounted a first-half comeback with goals from Uhann Degazon (31st minute) and Alfred Hippolyte (37th minute) to go into the break ahead. A stunning second-half turnaround saw Jaydin Ezekiel level the scores for Anse La Raye in the 63rd minute, before Dahmanii Berthier bagged a quick-fire double in the 67th and 75th minutes to seal the full three points. The loss leaves La Clery sitting outside the playoff qualification spots entirely, facing a real risk of missing the postseason for the first time in recent memory.

Sunday’s opening clash ended in a 1-1 stalemate between Gros Islet and Mabouya Valley. Hamaiael Charlery gave Gros Islet a dream start with a goal in just the second minute, but Mabouya Valley’s Torian Joseph equalised right on the cusp of halftime in the 45th minute, marking his 8th goal of the season.

The weekend’s action wrapped up with a fiercely contested west coast local derby between neighbouring sides Canaries and Soufriere, which ended in a 0-0 draw. Canaries were reduced to 10 men for the final 10 minutes of the fixture, after fan-favourite Cassius “Messi” Joseph was shown a second yellow card for simulation in the 80th minute, having first been cautioned in the 74th.

The updated league table confirms Vieux Fort South’s lead at the top on 29 points from 15 matches. Dennery and Canaries are locked on 25 points apiece, with Dennery claiming second position via a better goal difference. Gros Islet sits in fourth on 24 points, followed by Soufriere on 20, and the once-dominant La Clery down in sixth on 19 points, teetering on the edge of playoff elimination. In the relegation battle, Vieux Fort North sits seventh on 18 points, Mabouya Valley is one place above the drop zone in eighth on 17, Anse La Raye faces a very real threat of demotion to Tier 2 in ninth on 14 points, and Central Castries anchors the standings at the bottom with 13 points.
