Cruise season preparations ramp up in Castries

Even with just one cruise vessel anchored at Port Castries last Sunday, work crews across Saint Lucia’s key harbour-side tourism zones were in full swing to spruce up facilities ahead of a projected sharp uptick in cruise passenger traffic in the coming weeks. The normally bustling Jeremie Street, a waterfront thoroughfare that serves as the beating heart of activity during peak cruise season, hummed not with crowds of visiting tourists, but with the buzz of pre-season construction and cleaning teams. The only ship docked that day, TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff 2, saw barely any of its passengers venturing into the capital city’s central commercial districts, leaving the streets dominated by public and private work teams racing to complete upgrades. Crews at La Place Carenage, one of the island’s flagship duty-free shopping complexes and a widely used meeting and pickup spot for shore excursions, deployed pressure washers to deep-clean public walkways, storefront facades and public seating areas. Nearby, teams contracted by GPH/Saint Lucia Cruise Port were putting the final cosmetic touches on a brand-new purpose-built vendor arcade designed to offer local artisans and small retail operators dedicated space to serve visiting passengers. Just a few blocks over, utility staff from the Water and Sewerage Company (WASCO) carried out ongoing sewer line connection works to link the new Jeremie Street vendor arcade to the existing main pipeline running along Laborie Street, a planned infrastructure upgrade the utility had previously notified local residents and business owners about. While the 2026/2027 Saint Lucia cruise season officially kicked off on October 12 with the maiden call of the Seabourn Venture at Rodney Bay, initial arrival volumes have remained far below typical seasonal levels through the first month of operations. That trend is set to shift dramatically starting November 5, when two major luxury vessels, P&O Cruises’ Arvia and Oceania Cruises’ Vista, make their scheduled port calls. November is projected to host a total of 37 separate cruise ship visits, with that figure nearly doubling to 72 scheduled calls in December. Local tourism authorities forecast that arrival volumes will hit their seasonal peak between January and March 2027, before gradually declining through the end of the season in April 2027.
