Instead of asking their wedding guests for toasters, fine china or other conventional household wedding gifts, a cross-border couple with deep ties to Antigua and Barbuda turned their October nuptials into a major charitable drive that has raised close to $8,000 USD for a local residential care facility for vulnerable girls. Shurell, an Antigua-raised accountant currently employed by the United Nations, and Jim, a U.S.-based data solutions specialist working in the insurance sector, hosted 113 loved ones at the scenic Hodges Bay Resort & Spa on October 23 for their destination wedding, with over half the travelling party flying in from locations across the United States. The pair selected the whimsical, travel-themed moniker “Passport to Forever” for their celebration, and wove their philanthropic mission directly into the event’s core by directing all well-wishers to contribute to the Sunshine Home for Girls, a shelter operated by the Salvation Army that delivers round-the-clock care, safe housing and targeted support for young girls navigating unstable, high-risk life circumstances. Prior to departing Antigua following their post-wedding celebrations, the newlyweds formally handed over a $5,000 USD cash donation directly to local Salvation Army leadership to support the home’s ongoing operating costs. The remaining $3,000 USD of the raised funds has been allocated to cover critical, high-priority tangible upgrades for the facility, including a new commercial-grade refrigerator, durable new furniture for shared common areas and dormitories, and a suite of other daily essential supplies the shelter had previously been unable to afford. The community-focused wedding also leaned heavily on local Antiguan small business vendors to power every element of the celebration, ensuring the couple’s budget circulated back into the local economy rather than being spent on imported or international wedding services. The roster of local contributing partners included creative studios Ché Antigua, Zoé J. Richards Photography and Aperture Productions, alongside catering and dessert brands Vanilla Orchid and The Cookie People, acclaimed local wedding planner Paul Aflak, hair salon The Cutting Edge, and LJB Transportation & Logistics to manage guest movement across the island. Attendees were also treated to signature street food from popular local vendor Ollyn Martin’s food truck, and each guest took home a custom gift bag stuffed with homemade, locally sourced agro-produce prepared by beloved island residents Grandma Mirie and her granddaughter Tiffany. “Watching our closest friends and family come together to support a cause that lifts up some of our community’s most vulnerable young people was an absolutely incredible experience for us and every single person who joined the celebration,” the newly married couple shared in a post-event statement. “We cannot imagine a more meaningful, compassionate foundation to build our shared life together on.”
