A coalition of former senior leaders from across the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has issued a formal public appeal to the United Nations General Assembly and its member states to lend their full support to a complete, permanent end to the decades-old unilateral economic, trade and financial embargo imposed by the United States on Cuba. The group, which includes ex-prime ministers and former heads of state from 15 CARICOM member nations, emphasized that the nearly 62-year-old restrictive policy has inflicted cascading, unnecessary harm on ordinary Cuban citizens, limiting access to essential medical supplies, agricultural inputs, digital infrastructure and everyday consumer goods for generations. In their formal submission to UN diplomatic bodies, the former leaders noted that the vast majority of UN member states have repeatedly voted in favor of resolutions demanding the embargo’s elimination, and they called on global governing bodies to take concrete actionable steps to enforce these long-standing non-binding resolutions, rather than allowing the unilateral U.S. policy to continue operating in violation of international multilateral norms. The signatories also highlighted that the sustained embargo has undermined regional Caribbean integration efforts, disrupted cross-border supply chains across the Caribbean basin, and created unnecessary barriers to collaborative public health, climate resilience and economic development projects that would benefit both Cuba and neighboring CARICOM states. They further stated that ending the embargo would remove a major long-running source of geopolitical tension in the Western Hemisphere, creating new pathways for normalized diplomatic and commercial ties across the entire region.
