Suriname’s law enforcement authorities have confirmed that the prime suspect in a fatal shooting incident in the Snesi Bergi area of Brokopondo District was taken into custody on Saturday, following a complex multi-stage operation through remote, hard-to-access inland terrain. The arrest unfolded after local Brokopondo police received a formal report on Friday that a male resident had been fatally shot in the Snesi Bergi vicinity, followed by incoming intelligence that the alleged perpetrator was seeking to surrender to officers while hiding in a remote encampment located behind the Stuwmeer reservoir.
As outlined by police spokesperson Inspector Michel Elskamp, reaching the isolated hideout presented extreme logistical hurdles for law enforcement teams: officers were required to complete a five-hour boat journey across reservoir waters, followed by an additional one-hour ride on all-terrain vehicles to traverse unpaved, forested paths. A specialized task force drawn from the Capital Crimes Unit, Forensic Investigation Department, and local Brokopondo police finally departed for the encampment on Saturday, where they successfully detained the suspect and seized a bag containing multiple types of ammunition confirmed to belong to the individual.
Due to the area’s lack of regular road access, the suspect and the recovered remains of the shooting victim were transported back to the capital city of Paramaribo on a privately chartered aircraft arranged by a local business owner. Upon the plane’s landing at Paramaribo’s airport, the accompanying police contingent was confronted by an unruly group of people, believed to be close relatives and associates of the deceased shooting victim, who forced their way past initial security barriers to reach the suspect. Despite officers’ immediate efforts to block their advance, the group managed to physically assault the suspect, inflicting non-life-threatening injuries before law enforcement personnel could extract him from the melee.
The injured suspect was first escorted to the Capital Crimes Unit for formal booking and pre-trial detention processing, then transferred immediately to a hospital emergency department to receive medical care. Clinical staff treated his wounds, prescribed necessary medications, and directed him to schedule follow-up care with a primary care physician.
In a formal statement, police confirmed that they have opened a separate criminal investigation into the airport assault, filing an official complaint of aggravated assault on behalf of the suspect. Investigators are now reviewing witness statements and airport security footage to identify every individual who participated in the attack, with plans to pursue full criminal prosecution against anyone for whom sufficient evidence of involvement can be verified. Spokesperson Elskamp emphasized that all parties must allow official legal authorities to conduct their work unimpeded to ensure a fair, transparent judicial process, warning that any individuals engaging in vigilante violence or extrajudicial retribution will face equal criminal accountability under Suriname’s legal code.
