Six months for hospital burglary

A 62-year-old unhoused man facing no fixed residential address has been handed a six-month custodial sentence at Dodds Prison after admitting to a burglary at a local psychiatric hospital, an act he framed as a retaliatory response to what he described as being cast aside by the facility. Appearing before Magistrate Jared Richards at the District ‘A’ Traffic Court, Clent Antonia Decosta Rock entered an official guilty plea to a single count of trespass and theft, telling the presiding judge directly, “They turned against me, so I turned against them,” as he explained his perception of being abandoned by the psychiatric institution that once supported him. Court documents confirmed that the incident unfolded over a 48-hour window spanning September 30 to October 1, when Rock scaled the perimeter wall of the hospital compound undetected. Surveillance footage from multiple closed-circuit cameras positioned across the site captured his full sequence of movements after he cleared the wall: he made his way directly to an on-site clinic unit, located a window that had not been properly secured, and climbed through the opening to access the interior space. Once inside, he gathered a range of basic household and food supplies owned by the state, including staple groceries such as milk, tea bags, tinned tuna, peanut butter, hot dogs, rice, luncheon meat, oatmeal packs, noodles, biscuits, and sugar, alongside non-food items including pairs of slippers, puzzle sets, and decorative doilies. He stuffed all the stolen goods into a pre-brought shopping bag, with the total combined value of the recovered items calculated at $373.15. Rock was apprehended immediately after he exited the hospital grounds, with the full surveillance evidence and recovered stolen goods presented to the court by Police Constable Troy Tudor during proceedings. The presiding magistrate issued the six-month prison sentence after considering Rock’s guilty plea and the full details of the trespassing and theft incident.
