Residents Inside CHOGM Security Zone Warned About Temporary Re-entry Restrictions

Ahead of the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), local law enforcement officials have outlined significant temporary security measures that will impact residents living in proximity to the National Performing Arts Centre, the venue for the gathering’s opening ceremony. According to official statements, the access restrictions will take effect during the opening event scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, and will bar non-accredited local residents from re-entering their homes for approximately two hours. Superintendent Rodney Ellis, the senior police official leading security coordination for the summit, shared these details during a recent public town hall meeting convened to address community concerns. During the information session, Ellis clarified that while residents will be permitted to exit their properties ahead of the security lockdown, any individual lacking the official event accreditation will be turned away at security checkpoints for the duration of the restrictions. The announcement came in direct response to a question from a resident living on Church Street, one of the affected residential areas located within the newly established security perimeter. In an effort to ease community anxiety, officials confirmed that normal access to the neighborhood will be fully restored by midday on the same day, allowing residents to return to their regular routines promptly after the opening ceremony concludes. Law enforcement added that the enhanced security protocols will apply to both pedestrian and vehicle traffic across the entire restricted zone, with all movement through the area subject to police monitoring and control to ensure the safety of summit attendees and local residents alike.
