Sections of High Street and St. Mary’s Street to close from 6 am Today for Roadworks

The Antigua and Barbuda Ministry of Works has issued a public advisory regarding ongoing major infrastructure upgrades that will impact two key streets in central St. John’s City starting next year. Scheduled road closures are set to go into effect at 6 a.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2026, and will remain in place until the construction work is fully completed.

Two primary stretches of roadway are affected by this phase of the city-wide road improvement project. The first is a section of High Street running between Independence Avenue and Temple Street, and the second is a segment of St. Mary’s Street extending from Cross Street to Temple Street. Both of these corridors are high-traffic areas that connect multiple commercial districts and residential neighborhoods, so motorists and pedestrians are being urged to plan alternative routes in advance.

While vehicle access will be blocked to facilitate construction, local businesses adjacent to the work zone will remain open throughout the project, and pedestrian access to these storefronts and offices will be maintained. Construction planners note that heavy-duty construction equipment will be operating in close proximity to active traffic routes, so all road users are reminded to follow posted signage and directions from on-site traffic control personnel to avoid accidents and ensure safe movement through surrounding areas.

This roadwork is a core component of the St. John’s City Road Project, a government-led initiative aimed at upgrading aging urban infrastructure to improve traffic flow, reduce maintenance costs, and boost safety for all road users. Project organizers acknowledge that construction activity will likely lead to travel delays on surrounding alternate routes, so stakeholders including local residents, commuters, and business owners are encouraged to adjust their travel schedules and routes accordingly to minimize disruption.
