Community input is being sought by the Gilbert Agricultural and Rural Development (GARD) Center for a new environmental initiative in Antigua and Barbuda that focuses on tackling soil erosion through the strategic planting of vetiver grass. Ahead of any project implementation, a public consultation has been scheduled to give local residents a voice in shaping the proposal, emphasizing the organizing body’s commitment to inclusive, community-centered environmental action.
The consultation session will convene at St. George’s Anglican Church on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, beginning at 7 p.m. GARD Center officials note that the gathering will serve a dual purpose: first, to educate attendees on the core goals and mechanics of the proposed vetiver grass project, and second, to create an open space for community feedback and questions.
A key focus of the information session will be explaining how vetiver grass functions as a natural solution for soil and land conservation. With an extensive, deep-reaching root system, vetiver grass has long been recognized by environmental scientists and land management practitioners as an effective, low-cost tool for stabilizing sloped terrain and areas prone to heavy rain events. By binding soil together with its dense root network, the grass significantly reduces the risk of soil being washed away during storms, supports long-term land health, and advances broader environmental protection goals.
During the consultation, residents will have the opportunity to raise any concerns they may have, ask clarifying questions about project scope, timeline, or potential impacts, and share suggestions that could help refine the initiative before it moves forward. GARD Center has emphasized that broad public participation is critical to ensuring the final project aligns with the unique needs of local communities while advancing tangible progress toward environmental sustainability. Community members are strongly encouraged to attend the session and contribute their perspectives to help guide the project’s implementation.
