Vernice Bellony honored for seven decades of service to Dominica’s Credit Union movement

After nearly 70 years of dedicated service advancing collective financial empowerment across Dominica and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) region, pioneering cooperative movement leader Vernice Bellony has been awarded the prestigious OECS Credit Union Pioneer & Legacy Award.

Bellony’s journey in the credit union sector began all the way back in 1956, marking the start of a seven-decade legacy of shaping cooperative growth and expanding access to community-centered financial services. Beyond her decades of on-the-ground work, Bellony has also held public office, previously representing Dominica’s Vieille Case Constituency during a United Workers Party (UWP) administration.

Throughout her long career, Bellony’s work has been rooted in three core values: expanding financial inclusion for underserved communities, driving inclusive local development, and upholding the foundational cooperative principle of lifting collective livelihoods through shared effort. The Dominica Co-operative Societies League Limited, the body representing cooperative institutions across the island, has publicly backed the selection of Bellony for the regional honor, stating the recognition is thoroughly well-earned.

In a statement following the announcement of the award, the league highlighted that Bellony’s unique combination of visionary leadership, forward-looking foresight, and unwavering commitment to cooperative principles has been instrumental in building a credit union sector in Dominica that is both stronger and more resilient to economic shocks. Her influence extends far beyond institutional growth, too: she has mentored and inspired dozens of emerging cooperative leaders and advocates, passing down core values to new generations of movement organizers.

For Dominica’s entire credit union community, Bellony’s award marks a historic moment of national pride. The award not only celebrates Bellony’s extraordinary personal contributions to cooperative finance, but also underscores how one individual’s decades of sustained service can transform an entire sector, leaving a lasting mark on cooperative development across Dominica and the broader OECS region.
