A fatal weekend shooting on Belize’s Philip Goldson Highway has sparked widespread misinformation, prompting the Corozal Football Association (CFA) to step forward with a formal public clarification to separate the violent incident from its scheduled competitions. In a statement released on October 20, 2026, the CFA emphatically refuted claims circulating across multiple social media and independent media platforms that the shooting unfolded during one of its official First Division matches.
The violence, which occurred on Sunday evening near Carolina Village, left 35-year-old Lionel Logan dead and two other people – including a young child – wounded. According to initial police reports, the attack targeted an SUV carrying Logan and 38-year-old Julian Dyer, who is currently listed in stable condition after receiving medical care. Police confirmed that both men had left a football match prior to the shooting, but investigators have not yet confirmed which specific match they attended, nor have they identified a clear motive for the attack.
The CFA emphasized that it shares in the community’s grief over the senseless violence, calling the loss of life a heartbreaking tragedy for the Corozal district. Beyond the core clarification that the shooting did not occur at any of its match sites, the association reaffirmed that protecting the safety of athletes, game officials, and spectators is its top organizational priority. It noted that all its match venues and surrounding areas are maintained as secure public spaces, with uniformed police deployed to all official matches to enforce order and prevent unrest. Under local regulations, the CFA added, weapons are strictly prohibited at and near all its sanctioned football events in compliance with national law.
Moving forward, the association said it will continue upholding its longstanding commitment to creating a welcoming, safe space for all football lovers across the district, and will work closely with local law enforcement to address any potential safety risks that could impact community events.
