A public health initiative launched under Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister’s Vision Initiative is bringing critical, no-cost vision care services to eligible residents across the nation, and the country’s Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez has publicly thrown his full weight behind the effort.
On Monday, Fernandez made an on-site visit to Cedar Grove Clinic, one of the facilities participating in the program, to take part in the initiative firsthand and urge eligible constituents in the St. John’s Rural North constituency to utilize the free services before the program wraps up on Friday, October 23, 2026.
The initiative, which targets vulnerable groups with a specific focus on adults aged 40 and older, provides completely free eye screenings and complimentary reading glasses to qualifying residents. To access these no-cost services, participants are only required to present a valid government-issued photo identification card.
During his visit, Fernandez emphasized the outsized role that preventive eye care plays in maintaining long-term public health. He reminded residents that catching vision impairments and underlying eye conditions at an early stage can drastically reduce the risk of developing far more severe, irreversible complications down the line. The minister pushed back against the common habit of delaying care, encouraging constituents to schedule screenings proactively rather than waiting until noticeable vision disruptions impact their daily lives.
This free vision care program forms a core part of the government’s broader efforts to expand access to essential basic health services across Antigua and Barbuda, while also encouraging a culture of proactive health management among residents. Local officials have reiterated their call for all eligible residents to visit their nearest participating clinic before the approaching deadline to claim the valuable free benefits the initiative offers.
