A shocking and tragic accident has shaken the Catholic community in Ecuador, after a parish priest died when a large, wall-mounted crucifix collapsed and struck him during a live-streamed religious service. The deadly incident unfolded on the evening of Saturday, October 17, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, locally called Perpetuo Socorro, in the coastal city of Guayaquil.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil officially identified the victim as Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, the lead parish priest at the church and a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer – a prominent Roman Catholic religious order established in 1732 that operates across more than 80 countries worldwide.
Raw footage captured during the live broadcast, which was shared widely across social media platforms after the accident, shows the heavy crucifix suddenly pulling away from the wall positioned directly above the main altar. The structure fell directly onto Father Sánchez’s head, and witnesses on site confirmed he never saw the collapse coming. As the incident unfolded in real time, panicked worshippers at the service immediately called for emergency assistance, while the livestream continued running, allowing the tragedy to be viewed and shared by thousands of online users.
The Archdiocese confirmed Father Sánchez’s passing in an official statement posted to its social media channels on Sunday, October 18. The statement read: “We announce that our beloved Fr. Patricio Alfredo Sanchez Molinari, CSsR., who served as parish priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in the Central Vicariate, has departed for the Father’s House to rejoice in His presence and glory.”
As of Sunday afternoon, local law enforcement and municipal authorities have not issued any public comment on the accident. Investigations are still in the early stages, and the root cause of the crucifix becoming dislodged from its mounting remains undetermined.
