The labor community of Antigua and Barbuda is grappling with loss this week as the Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union (ABWU) confirms the passing of one of its long-serving senior leaders, Roumeila Daniel. Daniel held multiple key roles within the organization, serving as a sitting member of the union’s executive committee and acting as a shop steward, representing the interests of frontline workers in workplace negotiations and advocacy efforts.
In an official public statement released by the union’s leadership, ABWU’s executive board, paid staff, and general membership shared that they were overwhelmed with sorrow at the news of Daniel’s death. For years, Daniel has been recognized by union leadership as one of the organization’s most steadfast and loyal advocates, consistently showing up to advance the union’s mission of protecting workers’ rights and improving working conditions across the nation.
“ Sister Daniel was an Executive member, shop steward and faithful supporter of the Union,” the union’s official statement reads. As the labor movement pauses to honor her legacy, union leadership has extended heartfelt condolences to everyone who was close to Daniel, including her immediate and extended family, close friends, colleagues, and all those who loved her. The statement also paid public tribute to Daniel’s years of selfless service and unwavering commitment to advancing the global and local labor movement.
“We extend sincere condolences to her family, friends, colleagues and loved ones,” the statement added. “May her soul rest in peace.”
As of the release of the union’s statement, ABWU officials have not released any additional information regarding the circumstances that led to Daniel’s passing, nor have they shared public details about upcoming funeral or memorial arrangements for the leader.
