St Kitts and Nevis: PM Terrance Drew continues Cabinet meetings during stroke recovery – WIC News

The federation of St Kitts and Nevis remains in stable governing hands as Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew continues to fulfill core leadership responsibilities while recovering from a stroke he suffered in late August 2026, with treatment ongoing in Florida.

Drew’s health crisis first emerged on the evening of August 30, when he began experiencing mild discomfort, nausea and severe headaches. He was first admitted to the island’s Joseph N. France General Hospital, before medical authorities made the decision to transfer him overseas for specialized, precautionary monitoring just days later. In a subsequent public address to the nation, Drew confirmed he had suffered a stroke triggered by a tear in his vertebral artery, reassuring citizens that the stroke’s impact on his motor and cognitive functions was minimal. He confirmed he retained full control of his movement and speech, and has since been released from the hospital to complete a structured program of occupational and physical therapy in Florida.

Rather than stepping back entirely from his duties, Drew has opted to maintain regular check-ins and working sessions with his Cabinet throughout his recovery. In recent weeks, he has held working meetings with multiple senior ministers, including Attorney General Garth Wilkin — who has taken on oversight of National Security, Citizenship and Immigration portfolios in Drew’s absence — and Minister Marsha Henderson. On September 28, shortly after wrapping up St Kitts and Nevis’ delegation work at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, Acting Prime Minister Dr. Geoffrey Hanley traveled to Miami to meet with Drew, where he delivered a full update on national affairs and the outcomes of the UN trip. The two leaders also reviewed the government’s ongoing top priorities during the meeting.

Drew specifically recognized Konris Maynard, who stepped in as interim Acting Prime Minister during Hanley’s UN travel, and extended his gratitude to Hanley and the full Cabinet for steadying the government while he recovers. He also thanked his immediate family and the general public for the widespread prayers and support he has received throughout his treatment.

Under the federation’s constitutional line of succession, Hanley has served as full-time Acting Prime Minister since Drew traveled to the U.S. for treatment, additionally overseeing the Finance, Health, Human Resource Management and Social Security ministries in the Prime Minister’s absence. Drew emphasized that the government has continued operating without any disruption to its services or policy work during his recovery. While he has confirmed he intends to return to full-time leadership in the future, he has not yet announced a specific date for his return to the federation.
