In the aftermath of a powerful destructive earthquake that has wreaked havoc across Panama, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has formally announced its unwavering solidarity with the Central American nation’s government and civilian population.
The disaster has inflicted severe damage on both critical public infrastructure and culturally significant historical sites, disrupted regional and local travel networks, and left hundreds of local residents displaced and without emergency shelter following the tremor.
Beyond regional cooperation, the bonds between Panama and all CARICOM member states run deep, rooted in a shared multi-generational history that has seen thousands of citizens from both sides contribute directly to the broader social and economic development of the Caribbean. This long-standing interconnected relationship has laid a solid foundation for mutual support in times of crisis.
Drawing from its own long experience confronting the destructive impacts of natural disasters, which frequently leave communities displaced and infrastructure destroyed across its member states, CARICOM expressed its empathy for Panama’s ongoing crisis. The bloc extended its sincere wishes for a full and rapid recovery to all those who sustained injuries in the earthquake, alongside hopes for a swift restoration of normal daily life across the affected areas of the country.
