A young, promising athlete from Belize has been cut down by gun violence, leaving his entire team and local basketball community in deep mourning. Twenty-five-year-old Antonio Flowers, who worked as a tour guide in Dangriga and competed as a key player for the Griga Dream Ballers in the Belize Elite Basketball League, was fatally shot in Belize City on the night of Sunday September 28, 2026.
The shooting took place in the Antelope Street Extension neighborhood, in close proximity to Sister Mary Benedict Street, where Flowers was located at the time of the attack. Emergency responders rushed the wounded athlete to the country’s main public medical facility, Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, but medical teams were unable to save him, and he succumbed to his gunshot injuries shortly after arrival.
As news of Flowers’ death spread across the local sports community, the Griga Dream Ballers organization confirmed the loss in statements to media, sharing that the entire squad is reeling from the unexpected passing of one of their most beloved members. Carolyn Jang, the team’s social media coordinator, spoke on behalf of the organization, describing the profound shock and grief that has swept through the team.
“We’re actually shocked to hear it. It’s devastating. There are just no words that I can say, honestly,” Jang said in an interview, capturing the widespread disbelief surrounding the young athlete’s violent death.
Beyond his contributions on the court, Jang highlighted Flowers’ irreplaceable role as a source of energy and morale for the entire team. Known affectionately to teammates as Tony, Flowers had a naturally upbeat, friendly personality that turned even the most grueling preseason and regular season workouts into enjoyable experiences.
No matter what challenges the team faced, from losing streaks to tough matchups against top-ranked opponents, Flowers consistently stepped up as a motivator, pushing every teammate to raise their performance ahead of game days, Jang explained.
As a competitor, Flowers carved out a critical role for the Griga Dream Ballers as the team’s go-to sixth man – the first player brought in off the bench to shift the momentum of a game. Jang noted that he was widely recognized as the league’s top sixth man, bringing a relentless, aggressive style of play that always prioritized the team’s success over individual statistics. Whatever the team needed to secure a win, from stepping up on defense to hitting key shots, Flowers delivered when he checked into the game.
