More than three years after a violent late-night shooting left two resort workers with multiple life-threatening gunshot wounds, the perpetrator has received a substantial custodial sentence at court. Frederick Henry, a resident of Golden Grove, will spend 18 years and six months behind bars for the coordinated attack that unfolded outside the Carlisle Bay Resort in Old Road. The sentencing brings a long-awaited legal close to a violent incident that sent shockwaves through the local hospitality community, after Henry pleaded guilty to all charges against him back in June this year.
The attack itself took place at approximately 11:30 p.m. on April 11, 2023, when the two victims – Morrisa Henry and Dane Anthony, both staff members at the resort – had just finished their scheduled shifts and were walking toward the property’s main exit to head home for the night. Without warning, the pair came under sustained gunfire, leaving both with multiple serious bullet wounds. Anthony was hit several times across his body, while Morrisa Henry suffered gunshot injuries to her arms and torso, according to court documents and initial police reports.
Emergency services rushed the two wounded workers straight to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, the island’s main public hospital. Due to the critical nature of their injuries, the pair required urgent inpatient care in specialized departments: Morrisa Henry and Anthony were admitted to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit and Surgical Ward respectively to undergo life-saving treatment and recovery. In what medical teams described as a positive outcome, both victims eventually regained sufficient health to be discharged from the hospital, though they have had to cope with long-term physical and psychological impacts from the attack.
When handing down the sentence, the presiding judge handed down consecutive charges that would be served concurrently, resulting in the overall effective term of 18 and a half years behind bars. The longest individual sentence, 18 years and six months, was handed down for the charge of attempted murder in connection with the attack on Morrisa Henry. Henry received an additional eight-year custodial sentence for the charge of shooting with intent against Dane Anthony. On top of these two main charges, the court also handed down a four-year sentence for illegal possession of a firearm, and a one-year sentence for illegal possession of ammunition. Under the concurrent sentencing rule, all four sentences run at the same time rather than stacked one after another, so Henry will serve a total of 18 years and six months in state custody. This sentencing closes one of the longest-running high-profile violent crime cases on the island in recent years, delivering justice for the two injured workers and their families.
