In a landmark result that rewrote the history books of the Limacol Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL), the Guyana Amazon Warriors notched their first ever victory against the Barbados Tridents on Sunday, securing a hard-fought five-wicket win in the final fixture of the league phase at Bridgetown’s iconic Kensington Oval.
Both sides entered the do-or-die group stage finale with high ambitions: a lopsided win would have seen either franchise jump past table-leading Trinbago Knight Riders to claim the top seed heading into the knockout round. Despite competitive play from both teams, neither managed to secure the substantial margin of victory needed to overtake the front-running Knight Riders. Even so, both the Warriors and Tridents finished the league phase high enough on the points table to secure spots in the knockout playoff, setting up a rematch between the two rivals at the same Kensington Oval venue at 10 a.m. on Wednesday. The winner of that playoff clash will advance to the tournament grand final, where they will face off against the Trinbago Knight Riders on Thursday. The tournament’s fourth franchise, Jamaica Empress, was eliminated from title contention after finishing the league phase outside the top four qualification spots.
Sunday’s win for the Warriors came down to a clinical performance from their top-order batting line-up, who completed the highest successful run chase of the 2026 WCPL season — and the second-highest in the entire tournament — to reach their 159-run target with one full over remaining, having lost just five wickets along the way.
Opening batter Tazmin Britns was named Player of the Match for her steady, game-anchoring knock of 46 runs that guided the chase from the first over. She received valuable support from the rest of the early and middle order, with fellow opener Eboni Brathwaite contributing 22, all-rounder Nadine de Klerk adding 20, and batter Shermaine Campbelle hitting a quickfire 36. All four batters scored at a strike rate of over one run per ball, keeping the required run rate within reach throughout the innings.
For the Tridents, spin duo Afy Fletcher and Hayley Matthews turned in a tight, effective performance, combining to claim three wickets for just 45 runs across their eight total overs. Medium pacer Cherry-Ann Fraser, by contrast, had a costly day with the ball, conceding 46 runs from just three overs.
Earlier in the day, defending champion Tridents posted a competitive total of 158 runs for seven wickets after batting first. Captain Hayley Matthews led the way with her highest score of the 2026 season, an unbeaten half-century exactly 50 runs. Number three batter Kiran Navgire added 38 runs to the total, and the pair put together a 63-run second-wicket partnership that built a solid foundation for the late innings. Late-order batter Suzie Bates added a final boost to the total, smashing an unbeaten 22 runs from just 11 deliveries to push Tridents past the 150-run mark.
For the Warriors, off-spinner Sheneta Grimmond stood out as the top performer with the ball, finishing with figures of three wickets for just 21 runs. All-rounder Erin Burns provided excellent supporting bowling, claiming two wickets for 19 runs, capping a disciplined overall performance from the Warriors bowling attack.
