In a heart-stopping finish to the 2026 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) group stage, Barbados Tridents pulled off one of the most unlikely victories in tournament history on September 13, booking their spot in the knockout rounds thanks to a sensational all-round performance from Gudakesh Motie that produced 17 runs off the final over against Jamaica Kingsmen.
The match, hosted on Barbados Tridents’ home turf, followed two wildly contrasting narratives across its 40 overs. Jamaica Kingsmen got off to a blistering start, reaching 50 for the loss of just one wicket in the mandatory PowerPlay, with opening batter Maaz Sadaqat building a solid foundation of 47 runs to put the Jamaican side on track for a massive total. Captain Chris Green burned through his full allocation of overs within the first 10 overs, opening the door for his batting unit to post a competitive total that would keep the Tridents’ playoff hopes out of reach.
It was Motie who turned the tide with the ball first. After removing Sadaqat to leave the Kingsmen at 86/3, the Tridents’ bowling unit seized control. The Kingsmen’s vaunted experienced middle order, which had carried the side through the group stage, failed to convert starts: Andre Russell, Hassan Khan, and Keacy Carty each managed just one boundary apiece (a six and a four) before being sent back to the pavilion. Motie finished his three-over spell with exceptional figures of 2 wickets for just 7 runs, restricting the already playoff-contending Kingsmen to a total of 150 all out.
The Tridents’ chase got off to a disastrous start, however, with the home side losing three wickets in the PowerPlay and leaving themselves with an uphill battle for the entire second half of the innings. For most of the back end, the required run rate climbed to more than two runs per ball, putting knockout qualification seemingly out of reach.
Young batter Shadrack Descarte kept the Tridents’ hopes alive with a memorable maiden T20 half-century, scoring 56 runs off 42 deliveries. His most critical contribution came in the 15th over, where he struck 16 runs including two sixes to keep the chase on track heading into the final over.
What followed entered CPL folklore. Coming in at number nine in the batting order, Motie faced the final over needing 17 runs to win. He opened the over with two wides from bowler Odeon Smith, then slashed a four through the point region before hammering a straight six off the next two legal deliveries. By the final delivery of the over, the Tridents needed just one run to seal the win, and Motie scrambled through for a quick single to carry his side over the line.
While the Kingsmen suffered a devastating last-over defeat, the side still secured the fourth and final playoff spot, finishing with a better net run rate than Saint Lucia Kings to advance alongside the Tridents.
