A fatal ambush shooting has shaken Orange Walk District, leaving a 40-year-old local man dead and law enforcement actively hunting for the perpetrator. The victim has been identified as Jose Sosa Sr., a resident widely known by his nickname “Bones”, who was killed in a broad daylight attack on Sunday.
Details of the shooting were officially confirmed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero, who leads Belize’s National Crimes Investigation Branch, during a scheduled police press briefing held on the morning of September 14, 2026. According to Romero’s official statement, Sosa was resting in a hammock inside a local building when an unidentified male suspect rode up to his location on a motorcycle. The gunman then fired multiple rounds directly at Sosa, inflicting life-threatening wounds before fleeing the scene on the same motorcycle.
First responders rushed the injured victim to a medical facility for emergency treatment, but Sosa ultimately succumbed to his multiple gunshot wounds. Romero told reporters that preliminary investigations have led law enforcement to believe the killing is connected to drug-related activity. He also confirmed that Sosa was already a person of interest to local police prior to the shooting, noting that investigators have obtained clear information about the direction the suspect took after carrying out the attack.
