Residents across the Dominican Republic are gearing up for a nationwide earthquake evacuation drill next Tuesday, September 8, organized by the country’s Emergency Operations Center (COE). The drill is set to kick off at 10:00 a.m. local time, with a core mission of boosting public readiness and refining emergency response protocols for potential large-scale seismic events.
Beyond practicing evacuation routes and emergency actions for households, workplaces, and community groups, the drill will also serve as a critical technical test for the Cell Broadcast public alert infrastructure, which is a key integrated component of the Dominican Republic’s national early warning platform, “Alerta RD”. During the test, many citizens across the country will receive a simulated emergency alert directly on their mobile devices, paired with a distinct audible notification to replicate a real seismic emergency alert.
Unlike many app-based notification systems that require users to download specific software to receive alerts, this Cell Broadcast system is designed to push notifications directly to any compatible mobile device without requiring additional applications. This feature makes the system far more accessible to a broader cross-section of the population, a critical advantage for reaching all residents during a real emergency.
COE officials have issued a public call for full participation across all sectors of Dominican society, emphasizing that widespread engagement in the drill will help communities identify gaps in emergency planning, familiarize residents with safe evacuation procedures, and build a more resilient public prepared to respond effectively if a major earthquake strikes the island nation.
