The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) has released an official three-day weather forecast, active from 6:00 a.m. Sunday, September 6, 2026, through 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 8, 2026, warning of significant weather shifts driven by two key atmospheric systems: a tropical wave and an upper-tropospheric trough.
On Sunday morning, early showers and thunderstorms are already projected to impact the country’s eastern and northeastern provinces, along with the entire Caribbean coastline. By Sunday afternoon, the combined influence of the tropical wave, upper trough, and local geographic effects will amplify precipitation, triggering intense localized downpours across the Dominican Republic’s interior regions. These heavy rain events will be accompanied by sudden thunderstorms and strong wind gusts. The hardest-hit inland areas are expected to include Hato Mayor, Monte Plata, Duarte, northern Azua, San Juan, Elías Piña, Dajabón, Santiago Rodríguez, southern Santiago, Monte Cristi, and surrounding adjacent communities.
For Greater Santo Domingo, which encompasses the National District, Sunday will bring scattered morning cloud cover and a chance of light showers, with sweltering hot conditions settling in by the afternoon. Across the entire country, temperatures will remain elevated, producing an oppressive heat index that poses health risks to sensitive groups. Indomet has issued public health guidance urging all residents to drink water consistently throughout the day, wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing, and avoid unprotected extended exposure to direct sunlight. Pregnant people, children, and older adults are flagged as particularly vulnerable to heat-related illness. Overnight minimum temperatures will stay between 24°C and 26°C, while daytime highs will reach 34°C to 36°C across most low-lying regions.
Moving into Monday, after the tropical wave passes, residual atmospheric moisture will interact with orographic wind effects and the lingering upper-level trough to drive increasing cloud development through the afternoon. Localized heavy downpours, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are forecast for provinces along the Central Mountain Range, the southeastern region, and the country’s border zone. Indomet specifically named El Seibo, Hato Mayor, San José de Ocoa, La Vega, Elías Piña, and San Juan as areas at risk for stormy conditions on Monday. Santo Domingo and the National District will see mostly isolated cloud cover with clear spells through the day.
By Tuesday, the upper trough is projected to shift away from the Dominican Republic, leading to reduced, more isolated rainfall of lower intensity across the southeast, Central Mountain Range, border zone, and northwest. Any precipitation on Tuesday will be confined to the afternoon, with only isolated thunderstorms and wind gusts expected to clear by early evening. A new atmospheric feature will arrive Tuesday: a moderate plume of Saharan dust moving into the region. Greater Santo Domingo will see occasional cloud cover with only isolated light showers on Tuesday.
