In the early overnight hours of late August, a fatal traffic collision on Suriname’s Afobakaweg, at the location marked by utility mast 29, left one passenger dead and a second person hospitalized with injuries. Emergency responders rushed to the scene after the crash was reported, transporting the injured individual via ambulance to the local emergency department for urgent medical care.
Preliminary reports from local law enforcement outline that the vehicle involved was traveling from the direction of Rijsdijk toward the community of Paranam when the incident unfolded. For reasons that remain under active investigation, the driver lost control of the vehicle, departed the paved roadway, and came to rest in the eastern shoulder of the road. In the course of leaving the highway, the vehicle crashed through a support mast owned and operated by EBS, the local electricity distribution service, causing significant infrastructure damage.
The vehicle ultimately stopped along the edge of a nearby trench after the impact. According to initial on-scene reports, the fatality was a passenger seated in the left rear seat of the vehicle. First responders found the deceased victim on the ground behind the crashed vehicle, and a responding physician officially pronounced death at the crash site.
Local police have coordinated with a private towing company to clear the damaged vehicle from the scene and contracted a funeral service to transport the deceased for further processing. As of the latest update, authorities have not yet released the identities of either the deceased victim or the injured person, as they continue working to notify next of kin and complete preliminary investigative checks.
