Two dead after fuel tanker explodes on Santo Domingo’s George Washington Avenue

A devastating early-morning explosion of a fuel-carrying diesel tanker has left at least two people dead on a major thoroughfare in the heart of the Dominican Republic’s capital, Santo Domingo. The blast unfolded just after 7 a.m. local time on George Washington Avenue, steps away from the well-known Sheraton Hotel, a prominent landmark in the city’s tourist and business district.

Emergency response teams immediately rushed to the crash site to contain the incident and clear debris, but the sudden disaster triggered widespread gridlock across the Malecón, Santo Domingo’s iconic waterfront boulevard, and all connecting arterial roads in the surrounding area. Commuters traveling to work and early morning travelers faced hours of delays as first responders secured the entire zone for investigation and recovery operations.

José Luis Frómeta Herasme, the top official of the National District Fire Department, shared preliminary details about the victims. Authorities believe the two deceased people are the operator of the tanker truck and the driver of a sport utility vehicle that was involved in the incident that preceded the explosion. As of Monday morning, no identities of the victims had been made public, pending notification of next of kin and official forensic confirmation.

Recovery teams located one of the bodies inside the damaged SUV, while the second was recovered from an area adjacent to the wrecked tanker. Beyond identifying the victims, local officials are currently working to trace and confirm the identity of the transportation company that owns the ill-fated tanker truck, as investigations into the root cause of the explosion remain ongoing.
