ODM, UWI Seismic Research Centre to hold community meetings on volcanic activity in Gallion

Three coastal communities in Dominica’s Soufrière region are gearing up for critical public engagement sessions focused on volcanic risk, as local disaster management authorities and leading Caribbean seismic researchers team up to deliver up-to-date briefings and boost community preparedness.

Residents across Gallion, Soufrière, and Scotts Head have been formally invited to take part in the two-part series of community meetings, organized jointly by Dominica’s Office of Disaster Management (ODM) and the Seismic Research Centre of the University of the West Indies (UWI). The initiative is designed to cut through information gaps, connect local communities directly with scientific experts, and strengthen collective understanding of potential volcanic hazards in the area.

Unlike passive information sessions, these meetings are structured to encourage two-way dialogue between residents and officials. Attendees will have the chance to raise personal observations about recent unusual activity in their neighborhoods, voice unaddressed concerns about eruption risks, and get direct answers from the scientists and emergency planners who oversee ongoing volcanic monitoring and regional disaster response planning.

The first session, open exclusively to Gallion residents, is scheduled to kick off at 6:00 PM on Monday, July 27, 2026, at the local Block Meeting venue. The second gathering, which will serve residents of both Soufrière and Scotts Head, will follow two days later at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, hosted at the Lama Building in the area.

Organizers have stressed that widespread community participation is not just encouraged, but a core component of building long-term, hazard-resilient neighborhoods. In addition to open dialogue, the meetings will include structured presentations on evidence-based volcano preparedness strategies and actionable safety protocols that residents can adopt to protect their households and communities in the event of increased volcanic activity.
