Antigua and Barbuda, India discuss stronger trade and renewable energy ties

On the sidelines of the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting hosted by Antigua and Barbuda, Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar held a series of high-level bilateral engagements with the Caribbean nation’s top leadership this past Thursday. The first of these critical discussions was a tête-à-tête with Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne, where the two leaders explored untapped potential for deepening collaborative ties across a wide range of priority sectors. Key areas earmarked for expanded partnership included cross-border trade facilitation, two-way foreign direct investment flows, joint renewable energy development initiatives, and targeted support for the growth of Antigua and Barbuda’s local food processing industry. During the meeting, Jaishankar extended warm personal greetings from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Browne and the people of Antigua and Barbuda, while formally congratulating the prime minister and his entire administration on the seamless, successful execution of the landmark 2026 CHOGM summit. Shortly after his discussion with Prime Minister Browne, Jaishankar met separately with Antigua and Barbuda’s Foreign Minister E.P. Chet Greene for a follow-up working session. The two diplomats reached a consensus on ramping up coordinated efforts to advance shared priorities in public healthcare access, inclusive education expansion, small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) development, and targeted professional training and institutional capacity building programs for local workforces. The pair also held a detailed, constructive exchange of perspectives on the outcomes and key action items that emerged from the recently wrapped-up Commonwealth heads of government summit, aligning their positions on multilateral commitments agreed during the gathering.
