What began as a casual, curious encounter with a Caribbean nation’s national flag when he was just 6 years old has blossomed into a years-long passion for global connection for 12-year-old Okinawa resident Kanato Tamashiro, who recently hosted a public flag art exhibition at the Okinawa Prefectural Museum centered on his cross-cultural fascination with Antigua and Barbuda.
The standout feature of the youth-curated showcase is a dedicated, carefully curated section entirely dedicated to celebrating the culture, identity and history of the twin-island Caribbean nation, born from years of independent research and creative work Tamashiro pursued after his initial spark of interest in Antigua and Barbuda’s iconic national flag. Tamashiro is an active member of the Okinawa Language Adventure Team, a volunteer-led educational non-profit founded by Ruben, a Spanish linguist and Okinawa-based educator holding a doctoral degree. The community initiative is designed to guide local young people to explore unfamiliar languages, global geographies and diverse cultural traditions, cultivating a sense of curiosity and respect for communities outside of Japan’s borders.
To commemorate the upcoming 45th anniversary of Antigua and Barbuda’s independence, set to be marked on November 1, 2026, Ruben produced a dedicated short documentary video that profiles Tamashiro’s six-year journey of connection to the distant Caribbean nation, highlighting how a single national symbol can act as a powerful gateway to intercultural learning for young people across vastly different geographic regions. The widely shared story of Tamashiro’s exhibition has underscored the transformative potential of youth-led, grassroots cultural exchange, proving that small, personal acts of curiosity can bridge thousands of miles and foster meaningful mutual understanding between populations in Asia and the Caribbean. The full feature video documenting the student’s creative journey is available for public viewing online.
From Japan to Antigua and Barbuda: Happy 45th Independence Day!
