Paramaribo, Suriname – Local law enforcement confirmed on November 2 that a 24-year-old moped rider succumbed to his injuries at the Academic Hospital Paramaribo (AZP) on the evening of Saturday, October 31, 2026, following a violent road traffic collision on Kwattaweg, near the intersection with Tayerbladstraat. Officers from the Kwatta police station received an emergency alert reporting the crash at approximately 7:58 p.m. local time, and first responders arriving at the scene found the moped operator unconscious and suffering from severe traumatic injuries. Emergency medical teams immediately transported the victim via ambulance to the AZP emergency department, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Preliminary investigative findings released by local police indicate that the 21-year-old motor vehicle driver, identified by the initials M.G., was traveling along Kwattaweg when he attempted a right turn at the Tayerbladstraat intersection. Investigators state the driver failed to properly account for oncoming traffic, leading to the head-on collision with the approaching moped. A routine check following the incident revealed the 21-year-old driver did not hold a valid, active driving license at the time of the crash. He was immediately placed under arrest and transported to the local police station for processing. Following consultation with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the driver has been formally detained pending the completion of a full, comprehensive investigation into the exact circumstances leading to the fatality. The Traffic Unit of the Central Suriname Regional Police has been assigned to oversee all subsequent investigative work to establish a full, verified account of the incident.
