Antiguans and Barbudans hold fifth annual flag raising ceremony as nation celebrates 45 years of political independence

Against the backdrop of Antigua and Barbuda’s 45th anniversary of national political independence, diaspora communities across the United States are centering their unbroken cultural ties and deep national pride in a series of milestone celebratory events. On October 30, 2026, the Antigua and Barbuda Association of Philadelphia Inc. hosted its fifth annual flagship Flag Raising Ceremony on the steps of Philadelphia City Hall along John F. Kennedy Boulevard in Pennsylvania, drawing hundreds of community members, local civic leaders, and allies of the twin-island nation for a day of symbolic, joyful celebration. The most notable and widely celebrated moment of the gathering was the formal presentation of an official city proclamation, signed directly by Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker, which designates the full week of October 26 to November 1, 2026, as Antigua and Barbuda Week across the municipality. The formal designation is designed to amplify public awareness of the Eastern Caribbean nation’s rich cultural heritage, while honoring the decades of social, economic, and civic contributions that Antiguan and Barbudan diaspora residents have made to Philadelphia, even as they sustain close, ongoing connections to their home country. Leading the event for the host organization were its full executive leadership team: Association President Helenmay Bady, Vice President Dawn Greene, Treasurer Hadassa George, Public Relations Officer Barrymore Richards, and executive member Charles Ellison. The ceremony also drew a distinguished cohort of local dignitaries, including Kyra Harris from the Philadelphia Office of the City Representative, the Honourable Stanley Straughter (Vice Chair of the Mayor’s Commission on African and Caribbean Immigrant Affairs), Jamaica’s Honorary Consul in Philadelphia Christopher Chaplin, Charles Ellison (Director of the City of Philadelphia Office of Immigration Affairs), and the Honourable Jannie Blackwell, Chair of the Mayor’s Commission on African and Caribbean Immigrant Affairs. Organizers with the Antigua and Barbuda Association of Philadelphia emphasized that the annual flag raising is far more than a single public event: it is a tangible demonstration of the national spirit that transcends the geographic boundaries of the small Caribbean nation, traveling with every citizen who builds a life abroad. “No matter where Antiguans and Barbudans settle across the world, our pride in our shared heritage and our love for our homeland remains unshakable and deeply rooted,” the association stated in an official address during the ceremony.
