Youth footballers to get international exposure at talent showcase

In a continued push to nurture the next generation of Saint Lucian athletic talent, the Gros Islet Football League has announced the upcoming 2026 Republic Bank Talent Showcase, a targeted program designed to clear new pathways for local youth footballers to access international competitive exposure and United States collegiate athletic scholarship opportunities. Hosted in partnership with title sponsor Republic Bank, event executor MAD Sports Group, and a network of supplementary local and international partners, the multi-day event will unfold across two distinct phases at the Corinth Playing Field.

The first phase, running from December 7 to 11, will combine structured skill-building training sessions, formal player performance evaluations, and specialized coaching led by a mixed cohort of experienced US-based football instructors and seasoned local Saint Lucian trainers. This instructional block will be immediately followed by two full days of competitive showcase matches on December 12 and 13, where registered participants will demonstrate their newly honed abilities for attending scouts and coaching representatives. Eligible players are grouped into three age brackets: Under-12, Under-14, and Under-16, and the program is open to all youth footballers across Saint Lucia, not just residents of the Gros Islet region.

Gros Islet Football League President Shayne Paul emphasized the program’s broader mission that extends far beyond on-pitch skill development during remarks to local outlet St Lucia Times. He noted that the 2025 iteration of the talent showcase already delivered tangible results, with one participating youth player successfully securing a full US collegiate football scholarship. “For our league, the work we do is never limited to what happens on the football pitch,” Paul stated. “We are incredibly grateful for Republic Bank’s sponsorship and the support from all our additional partners that makes this year’s expanded showcase possible. The visiting US coaches will bring a fresh, distinct instructional framework that complements our local training methods, helping young athletes understand their current skill level and the exact steps they need to take to pursue opportunities outside of Saint Lucia.”

Paul also highlighted the long-term collaborative benefits of the league’s growing US partnerships, noting that the Gros Islet Football League’s landmark debut at the prestigious Dallas Cup international youth tournament earlier in 2026 grew directly from connections forged through previous showcase initiatives. The program continues to build on that cross-border collaboration to expand access for more local athletes each year. Interested participants can register by paying a $300 participation fee, with a 50% deposit required to lock in a spot, and may reach event organizers directly at phone numbers 726-6449 or 733-2922 for additional details.
