National Performing Arts Centre to officially open Friday in St. John’s

Antigua and Barbuda is set to mark a major milestone in its cultural development this coming October, with the official opening of its long-awaited National Performing Arts Centre scheduled for Friday, October 23, 2026. Located at the intersection of High and Cross Streets in the capital city of St. John’s, the new facility will bring a much-needed permanent, dedicated venue to the country’s growing performing arts community, representing a significant upgrade to Antigua and Barbuda’s national cultural infrastructure.

According to official invitations circulated by the government, the opening ceremony will kick off at 10:00 a.m., with guests requested to take their seats no later than 9:30 a.m. to ensure the event runs smoothly. Anyone interested in attending has been asked to confirm their attendance by RSVP to Adiva Richards, the government point of contact for the opening event.

The new arts centre was not built from the ground up; instead, it represents a thoughtful adaptive reuse project that transformed the historic former Deluxe Cinema into a modern, versatile performance space. Renovations have resulted in a venue that can comfortably hold approximately 850 attendees, making it suitable for everything from large-scale theatrical productions and national concerts to community cultural showcases and other performing arts gatherings.

In the weeks leading up to the official opening, government updates confirmed that project teams are already putting the finishing touches on the facility. Earlier this month, the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda announced that technicians had begun testing the centre’s state-of-the-art multimedia systems, while on-site crews completed deep cleaning of all interior spaces and carried out final minor finishing works to prepare the venue for its first guests.

Beyond providing a permanent home for local artistic expression, the National Performing Arts Centre will also play a key role in an upcoming major international event hosted by Antigua and Barbuda. In November, immediately following the venue’s opening, the centre is scheduled to host the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), welcoming heads of state and official delegates from across the Commonwealth bloc to Antigua and Barbuda.

Government officials frame the opening of the National Performing Arts Centre as another critical step forward in the country’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its cultural and creative sectors. By investing in purpose-built infrastructure for the arts, Antigua and Barbuda is laying the groundwork for expanded artistic opportunities, greater cultural engagement among residents, and increased international visibility for its local creative community.
