Belize’s tourism sector is set for a major European boost with the announcement of a brand-new direct air connection linking Frankfurt, Germany, and Belize City, set to launch in December 2027. The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) made the official confirmation this week, revealing that Germany’s Discover Airlines, a leisure-focused carrier under the Lufthansa Group umbrella, will operate the groundbreaking route.
The service is structured as a seasonal offering, aligned to capitalize on peak travel demand between the two regions. Starting December 16, 2027, flights will run twice weekly, every Thursday and Sunday, continuing through mid-April 2028. This timeline is no coincidence: it matches perfectly with Belize’s popular dry season, when warm, sunny weather draws international visitors, and coincides with the winter holiday and travel period for European tourists looking to escape colder climates.
For Belize, this new route marks a key milestone in the country’s long-term tourism strategy. Anthony Mahler, Belize’s Minister of Tourism, Youth, Sports and Diaspora Relations, emphasized that the connection directly supports the nation’s goal to diversify its international tourism source markets and expand its global air access network.
“This new service carries profound strategic weight for Belize’s tourism industry as we work to grow our source market base and improve international connectivity,” Mahler explained. “Strengthening our footprint across Europe has been a core priority for our team, and this direct link from Frankfurt opens unprecedented doors to attract more travelers from Germany and surrounding European countries. At the same time, it makes it far simpler for visitors to experience everything Belize has to offer, from our globally famous Barrier Reef and untouched tropical islands to our dense, biodiverse rainforests, centuries-old ancient Maya archaeological sites, and our vibrant, one-of-a-kind cultural heritage.”
Beyond just adding a new travel option, the route creates a permanent new gateway for European travelers accessing Belize, connecting the Central American nation to a network of key European travel markets through Frankfurt’s major international hub. Discover Airlines, which launched operations in summer 2021 and already operates regular leisure flights from both Frankfurt and Munich across the globe, was selected as the ideal partner for this expansion.
Moving forward, the BTB plans to collaborate closely with Discover Airlines and local and regional tourism industry stakeholders to raise Belize’s profile across the European travel market, drive increased visitor numbers from the region, and capitalize on the new connection to deliver long-term economic benefits for Belize’s tourism-dependent economy.
