Barbados crush BVI in World Cup qualifier

The opening day of the Netball World Cup Sydney Regional Qualifiers – Americas delivered a slate of competitive matches at Bridgetown’s Garfield Sobers Gymnasium on Monday, headlined by a statement 79-14 rout of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) by host nation Barbados. The Bajan Gems, Barbados’ national netball squad, asserted their dominance from the first whistle, building an unassailable lead through every quarter of the matchup. After closing the opening 15 minutes with a 21-5 advantage, the side stretched their gap to 47-7 by halftime, and extended it further to 61-9 heading into the final frame, before wrapping up the lopsided final score. Speaking after the emphatic opening win, Bajan Gems captain Shonette Azore-Bruce expressed enthusiasm for the team’s strong start and excitement for upcoming matches. “We hadn’t scouted or faced the BVI side in a very long time, so our whole team went into today’s game focused on coming out with intensity early, and keeping the pressure up for the entire match,” Azore-Bruce explained. “We got exactly the start we wanted. Right now, all I’m thinking about is building on this momentum for the next games, one match at a time.” The team’s head coach Julie Echoed Azore-Bruce’s satisfaction with the opening result, while noting that the side will turn its focus immediately to preparation for future opponents. “This is just one win behind us. Now we’ll break down every quarter of this game to adjust and refine our strategy, then turn our full attention to the next matchup,” Phillips said. The coach also addressed her decision to rotate the entire squad extensively during the third and fourth quarters of the lopsided match, explaining that the move was designed to get every member of the roster valuable competitive court time. “It was a good opportunity to shake off any pre-tournament rust, let less experienced players get reps against a live opponent, and give everyone a chance to contribute to the opening match,” she added. The Barbados-BVI clash was one of four opening-round matches held on the tournament’s first day, with three other competitive contests rounding out the schedule. In the tournament’s opening fixture, Trinidad and Tobago claimed a 61-45 win over Grenada in a far more closely contested matchup. Like Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago built its lead early, holding a 20-7 advantage after the first quarter and extending it to 35-15 by halftime. Grenada closed the gap slightly in the final frame, but could not overcome the early deficit, leaving the final score 16 points in favor of Trinidad and Tobago. The most dramatic contest of opening day came from a matchup between St Vincent and the Grenadines and the United States, which ended with a narrow two-point 50-48 victory for St Vincent and the Grenadines. The United States got off to a solid start, leading 11-8 after a tightly contested first quarter and holding a 28-24 lead at halftime. St Vincent and the Grenadines fought back over the course of the third quarter, tying the game at 36-36 heading into the final 15 minutes. A tight back-and-forth final frame ended with St Vincent and the Grenadines edging out their opponent to secure their opening win. Rounding out the day’s results, Canada also kicked off their tournament with a win, clinching a nine-point 34-25 victory over Saint Lucia. Canada took a narrow 7-5 lead in the first quarter, then slowly extended their advantage through each subsequent frame, going into halftime up 18-12 and closing the third quarter up 26-20, before holding off Saint Lucia to lock in the opening win.
