Local law enforcement in Suriname has confirmed three separate violent incidents that unfolded within hours of each other: two separate shootings that left two people wounded, and an armed home invasion that ended with attackers stealing a hunting rifle and thousands in cash.
The first shooting was reported at 9:54 p.m. local time on Friday along Drambrandersgracht. According to official details released by a police spokesperson, one person was hit by a bullet in the left armpit. Investigators also found a bullet impact mark on a nearby vehicle at the scene. As of the latest update, the wounded person is in stable medical condition.
Roughly three and a half hours later, at 1:15 a.m. local time Saturday, police received a second alert about a shooting through Surcad, the local ambulance service. This incident took place in the Blakawatra region, close to the town of Paranam. The wounded person from this shooting was first transported to the Redi Doti checkpoint via private transport before being transferred to a Surcad ambulance for onward movement to a local emergency department. To date, police have not released any additional information about the circumstances surrounding this second shooting, nor an update on the victim’s current health status.
Alongside the two shootings, police also received a report of an armed robbery at a residential property in Leiding 7B. Attackers made off with multiple forms of currency and a registered hunting weapon: the stolen items include a single-barrel 12-caliber Baikal hunting rifle, 6,000 Surinamese dollars, 200 euros, and 20 U.S. dollars. Law enforcement has not yet shared any identifying details about the perpetrators or additional context about how the home invasion was carried out, and investigations into all three incidents are ongoing.
