Two Detained After Double Murder in Cotton Tree

A violent early-morning shooting has left two young men dead in the quiet rural community of Cotton Tree Village, located in Belize’s Cayo District, and authorities have taken two suspects into custody in connection with the attack.

The victims have been identified as 27-year-old Fernando Jones and 21-year-old Esau Perez, both lifelong residents of the village. Both died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds sustained in the Friday assault, law enforcement officials confirmed.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith shared new details on the attack’s progression, confirming that Jones was the gunman’s pre-determined target. “Jones, who is well known to local law enforcement for prior interactions, was the clear intended target of the shooter,” Smith stated in an official press briefing.

The attack unfolded as Jones was exiting a gathering that both victims were attending. An unidentified armed man stepped out of hiding and opened fire, striking Jones multiple times. As the gunman fled the scene, he fired additional shots in Perez’s direction, fatally wounding the 21-year-old who was not believed to be connected to the underlying conflict, Smith explained.

Investigators have now linked the shooting to a long-running feud between rival groups active in the Cayo District. All evidence collected so far points to the conflict flaring up at the wake the two victims were attending before the attack.

Notably, law enforcement had already recognized the risk of violent clashes in the area earlier this year. In response to that pre-existing risk assessment, a permanent police patrol remains stationed in Cotton Tree Village to maintain public order and respond quickly to any further unrest. Authorities are continuing their investigation to identify the gunman and unpack the full context of the factional dispute that led to the shooting.
