Twee verdachten aangehouden met negen petflessen kwik bij Stolkertsijver

On Wednesday, October 14, law enforcement officers conducting a routine checkpoint operation at the Stolkertsijver police outpost took two individuals identified only as M.A. and M.V. into custody. Following a search of the vehicle the pair were traveling in, authorities uncovered nine plastic bottles filled with liquid mercury, carefully concealed to avoid detection.

According to official statements from the police, the contraband was hidden inside two white rice sacks, stowed beneath the seats of both the driver and the passenger. This deliberate hiding tactic allowed the suspects to attempt to move the dangerous material unnoticed before the checkpoint intercept.

The two detainees now face charges connected to violations of two national laws: the Anti-Smuggling Act and the Economic Offenses Act. Following their arrest, both the suspects and the seized mercury were transferred to the national police Fraud Division, which will lead all further investigative work into the case.

To date, law enforcement officials have not released additional details regarding the total quantity of mercury recovered, nor have they confirmed the suspected origin of the contraband or the intended end destination for the illicit shipment.
