MOU signed for US$100m investment in Mayreau

On September 30, a landmark partnership aimed at redefining sustainable tourism in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines was formalized in Kingstown, when Invest SVG, the country’s investment promotion agency, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Luxembourg-based real estate developer Nativo Group. The agreement paves the way for the development of SOMA Mayreau, a high-end eco-resort project, alongside a suite of community-focused and environmental conservation initiatives aligned with the government’s national sustainable development strategy.

Planned for the pristine Grenadine island of Mayreau, SOMA Mayreau is envisioned as a 100-plus key hospitality destination that integrates luxury guest accommodations, private hotel villas, curated wellness experiences, farm-to-table dining concepts, and immersive marine adventure offerings. Backed by a total planned investment of approximately $100 million USD, the entire project will be privately funded through a mix of foreign private capital and commercial bank lending, with no requirement for public financing from the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines government.

Construction of the resort is scheduled to span 24 months, and project organizers project widespread economic benefits for local stakeholders throughout both the construction and operational phases. During building, the development will generate dozens of local jobs, provide targeted skills training for local workers, and prioritize the purchase of local goods and services. Once operational, the resort will drive sustained year-round demand for local transport, marine services, agricultural produce, food and beverage supplies, and other businesses across the island’s broader tourism ecosystem.

Dwight Fitzgerald Bramble, the country’s minister of foreign investment with oversight of Invest SVG, emphasized that Mayreau holds unique cultural and environmental value as one of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’ most cherished natural assets. “Any significant investment on the island must respect its character, its environment and, above all, the interests of its people,” Bramble stated. He added that what sets the SOMA Mayreau proposal apart is its intentional focus on the core responsibilities of small-island development: building reliable infrastructure, implementing responsible water and waste management, delivering tangible jobs and training, and guaranteeing local residents a meaningful say in the project’s development.

Beyond the resort itself, Nativo Group has developed a comprehensive integrated strategy for water, waste, and resource management across the island, designed to cut waste at its source and keep reusable materials in circulation on Mayreau. These environmental plans are paired with a series of community-led initiatives, including the restoration of the historic Mayreau Parish Church complex, upgrades to village infrastructure, improvements to local water and energy resilience, support for small-scale local food production, apprenticeship programs for young residents, and large-scale island environmental restoration projects. All priority initiatives will be finalized through open community consultation, with dedicated governance, funding, and delivery frameworks put in place to ensure accountability, according to the country’s Agency for Public Information (API).

Danny Germaine, CEO of Nativo Group, reaffirmed the developer’s commitment to embedding the project within Mayreau’s unique social and ecological fabric. “Our ambition is to create an exceptional hospitality destination that feels unmistakably a part of Mayreau,” Germaine said. “The measure of success cannot simply be the hotel we create. If we are going to build and operate here for the long term, the investment has to create meaningful opportunities for the people already living and working on Mayreau. We want SOMA to contribute positively to the island, economically, environmentally and as part of the community.”

The recently signed MOU marks a key milestone in the development process, building on completed master planning and technical feasibility studies. According to the API, the agreement underscores Invest SVG’s ongoing commitment to facilitating high-impact, responsible foreign direct investment that delivers shared value across Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
