Chicot 50 leads Gladiators past Sunrisers in Gros Islet

The second day of the much-anticipated Gros Islet Battle of the Knights T20 tournament delivered a dramatic, come-from-behind victory on Thursday night, as the Beausejour Gladiators overturned an early batting collapse to down the Fort Rodney Sunrisers by four wickets at the Francis Baba Lastic Grounds. With 22 deliveries still left in their chase, the Gladiators secured a crucial five points, thanks to a match-winning performance from vice-captain Tyrel Chicot, who earned Man of the Match honors for his standout all-round display.

Gladiators skipper Jard Goodman won the pre-game toss and opted to send the Sunrisers into bat first, a decision that looked risky early on when Fort Rodney’s opening pair of Dane Edward and Khan Elcock put on a solid 73-run opening stand to get their innings off to a flying start. The breakthrough finally came in the eighth over, when Gladiators spinner Jaden Elibox broke the partnership, bringing Sunrisers captain Kimani Melius to the crease.

Edward and Melius extended the Fort Rodney total with a 36-run second wicket partnership, with Edward reaching a well-compiled 54 runs off 40 balls, decorated with five fours and four towering sixes. But the Gladiators’ turning point in the field came in the 12th over, when Chicot caught Edward off a delivery from Yorrick Joseph at 2-109. Just two balls later, Joseph bowled Melius for 22 runs off 12 balls, leaving the Sunrisers reeling at 3-110, and opening the door for the Gladiators to restrict the opponent’s final total.

Elibox followed up his initial breakthrough by removing Bolton Sayers for 11, before Chicot claimed the wicket of Johnathan Daniel for five. Lower-order resistance from Fort Rodney saw Lorde hit an unbeaten 21 off 18 balls, while Keon Gaston struck 16 from just nine deliveries before being run out on the final ball of the 20th over. Fort Rodney closed their 20 overs at 166 for 6, with Joseph leading the Gladiators’ bowling attack finishing with 2 wickets for just 19 runs from three overs, and Elibox claiming 2 for 30. Chicot rounded out his fielding contribution with two catches and one wicket for 34 runs, setting the stage for his heroics with the bat.

Beausejour’s chase started at a steady pace, but quickly unraveled into a top-order collapse that left the side on the brink of defeat. Dillan John got the Sunrisers’ bowling attack going, removing Goodman for eight in the second over with the score at 31, before trapping Glenn Boulogne leg before wicket for 29. Sunrisers vice-captain Jeandell Cyril then struck with consecutive deliveries in the fifth over: he had Stephen Naitram caught for five by Melius, before bowling Elibox for a duck. John claimed his third wicket in the sixth over, trapping Udell Preville LBW for one, leaving the Gladiators in a precarious position at 5 wickets down for just 57 runs.

It was Chicot who stepped up to rescue his side, combining with McKenny Clarke for a 60-run sixth-wicket partnership off just 35 deliveries to steady the chase. Clarke played a brisk, aggressive knock of 31 runs off only 15 balls, hitting two fours and three sixes before Cyril had him caught by Keon Gaston in the 12th over, leaving the Gladiators at 6 wickets for 117 runs. At that point, the side still needed 50 runs from 50 balls with four wickets remaining, but Chicot found a dependable partner in veteran batter Larry Edward, who anchored the closing stages of the chase.

Cyril finished the match with impressive figures of 3 wickets for 30 runs from four overs, while John ended with 3 for 44, but costly errors from the Sunrisers bowling unit handed the Gladiators a key advantage. Fort Rodney conceded 20 extra runs, including 17 wides and three no-balls, which eased pressure on the Gladiators in the closing overs. Chicot hit an unbeaten half-century to guide his side home, finishing on 54 not out off 38 deliveries with four fours and three sixes, while Edward remained unbeaten on 21 off 15. The unbroken 52-run seventh-wicket stand between the pair carried the Gladiators to 169 for 6 after 16.2 overs, sealing a four-wicket win with 22 balls to spare.
