Four years after the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse, a major development in the long-stalled investigation has unfolded: 18 suspects linked to the killing have been transferred from Haiti to the United States to face federal prosecution. The group includes a former high-ranking Haitian government official and 17 Colombian ex-soldiers accused of acting as mercenaries in the July 7, 2021 attack that left Moïse dead at his private residence near Port-au-Prince and wounded his wife Martine Moïse. All 18 suspects made their first court appearance at a Miami federal courthouse on Monday, one day after they were flown out of Haiti’s capital on a U.S. military transport plane.
